Appliance Management Service (AMS)

The Appliance Management Service (AMS)

The Appliance Management Service (AMS) is a new locally commissioned service that:

  • Helps you order stoma, urology, and transanal irrigation products.
  • Replaces GP practice prescribing for these products.
  • Does not change how you order other medicine.

If you use these products, you will now order them through the AMS instead of contacting your GP practice.

The AMS is run by specialist nurse prescribers and trained advisors who:

  • Approve prescriptions
  • Ensure products meet your needs
  • Support you with questions or changes

Important: You do not need to contact your GP or the AMS until you receive a welcome call. Until you receive this call, please continue ordering your products from your GP practice as usual.

Please read our FAQs below to find out more.

Ordering your prescription through AMS

The Appliance Management Service (AMS) will arrange an emergency prescription if needed.

You can continue to have your products dispensed by your current Dispensing Appliance Contractor (DAC) or community pharmacy.

You do not need to change your dispenser because of this service.
You can choose to change your dispenser at any time if you wish.

People are moving to the AMS over a six-month period. Each GP practice has been given a date for when their patients will transfer.
You will be contacted by the AMS when it is your turn so you do not need to contact your GP or the AMS until you receive a welcome call.

Once a prescription has been issued by the AMS, it will be sent to your chosen DAC or community pharmacy within two working days.

Your DAC or pharmacy will then arrange delivery of your products.
You may need to contact them directly to confirm delivery arrangements.

The NHS in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire is changing how prescriptions for stoma, urology and transanal irrigation products are managed to make the process simpler and more consistent.

Using a single service means prescriptions are approved by specialist nurses who understand these products and can help make sure you are using the most suitable options for your needs. It also reduces pressure on GP practices.
